Personal

b 1953 Iain is married with three daughters: wife Nicola is a Schoolteacher, eldest daughter Katie a solicitor living in Chester with husband and two children Lily and Sarah who are identical twins, Mollie an English teacher living and working in Liverpool who is getting married in July and Elspeth an undergraduate at Newcastle University studying English.

Iain is the founder and CEO of Imagine Independence a mental health charity based in Liverpool which now provides services in Merseyside, Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Cumbria and four London Boroughs. He is a trustee of the Mental Health Providers Forum a consortium of the leading mental health charities in England and Wales. He previously worked for MIND and Age Concern

Public Life: Iain has fought four general elections, including Southport in 1983. He was first elected to Sefton MBC in 1984 for Kew ward and has represented Birkdale since 2002. He has also served on Cheshire County Council and Congleton Borough Council. Iain has also been elected to his party’s National Executive and Policy Committee. Iain has edited the Birkdale Focus Blog since 2007 which has been included in the top 10 of Councillor Blogs by Total Politics Magazine. His interest in Health and Social Care has also led him to serve on a Family Practitioners Committee and Health Authority Iain has also served as a Churchwarden in Birkdale

Iain has a BA(Hons) in Politics and Government and a MA (Quasi Markets and Social Welfare)

Hobbies and Interests

Iain has an allotment on the Birkdale Irrigation site for 20 years and along with daughter Mollie entered a pumpkin in the Ainsdale Show which won the ‘Best in Show’ prize. He supports Southport FC and is a regular at Haig Ave. Iain enjoys fell walking and has completed several long distant foot paths including The West Highland Way, Offa’s Dyke and Wainwright’s Coast to Coast path. He hopes to do part of the Pembrokeshire Coastal path this year. As befits parent with two daughters who have studied English at University he enjoys reading and the theatre
